Penkridge Phoenix is what it is because of the members who put a lot of hard work into making it work. Thanks must go to :-

those that provide teas, coffee and biscuit at the coffee mornings and then wash up;

the members who lead the many activities, e.g. art, badminton, walks, games afternoon, curling, speakers corner, the bash, etc, etc;

the members who put on events, trips, etc.

If you would like to help in any way with the above or indeed would like to start a new activity or run an event, contact anyone on the committee who will be glad to advise and guide you.

The Bash 28th March

We held our annual ‘Bash’ and had a great time. The amateur entertainment followed by good food followed by Bev Pegg and his group made for a good evening. Non of this can happen of course without the time and effort Linda Savage puts in arranging it all. Thanks also go to Vee Jackson and her team for providing the food, Geoff Lester and his team for all the backstage arrangements, Doug Cresswell & Dave Bentley for getting the sound equipment working and of course all of the cast. And finally thanks to those who helped clear up at the end.

Llandudno

A great day out for two coach loads at the Victorian weekend. Well done Ray Franks.

Tips

E-mail passwords:- Change them regularly; don’t make them simple, e.g. John123 as these are easily hacked; use other characters besides letters and numbers, e.g. !@£$%?; the longer the password the more difficult it is to break.

e-mails:- If you have an e-mail and you don’t recognise the sender treat it with suspicion. If it has an attachment be sure it is safe to open. If you recognise the e-mail address and open it, look for terminology used, spelling mistakes, etc and think ‘is this what I would normally accept from this person’. Have they ended the e-mail with their normal comment, e.g. best regards, love, bye, etc but its different this time. If so view it with suspicion

Security:- Ensure you have the latest version of your Anti-virus/internet security/firewall protection software, and make sure its activated!

Scams:- There are so many scams now, particularly by telephone, that they too numerous to mention. But remember:- Don’t divulge your bank details unless you are confident its a bona-fide person, company, etc; if you get a call to say your pc has a problem don’t start your pc up; if the caller, to prove they are genuine, suggests you ring them, don’t immediately do it. Wait 30 mins, check the number is genuine by googling the company on the internet and ring the number thats on the website.

Because of our age, i.e. over 50 we are targeted by scammers. There is a website called Think Jessica which is supported by the National Crime Agency, Trading Standard Institute and Staffordshire County Council that gives lots of information about scams and fraud and how to protect yourself. Click here for a link to the site.

Have you joined? OWL keeps communities safe, helps reduce crime and keeps people informed of what’s going on locally. It’s a shared, secure platform for the public and local authorities to maximise the potential of Neighbourhood Watch. Walks Narrative

There are two walking groups and essentially the difference is the long walkers meet every Tuesday and walk between 4-6 miles and approximately 25-45 go.

The short walkers (that’s not their stature by the way) meet every other Tuesday morning and walk between 3-4 miles and approximately 10-20 go.

You are strongly advised to wear good walking gear, particularly waterproof boots in the winter months especially. You should be prepared for climbing over stiles and crossing fields with cattle in.

To help the environment many share travel and make their own arrangements regarding costs. There are no additional club fees for either of the walking groups. Please refer to the walking schedules for the latest walk descriptions.

If you require more information contact Meryl George for the short walks and Derek Green for the long walks.

Short Walk Schedule

Boots are strongly  recommended. If you are unable to make these dates leaders must arrange a swop with someone else on the list. Leaders must inform the group of their  meeting points by the previous walk.

******All walkers meet at 10:00 for a prompt 10:15 start *******
